Iran Unveils ‘Ambassador of Death’ Unmanned Drone Bomber

TEHRAN, Iran –  TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday inaugurated the country’s first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft, calling it an “ambassador of death” to Iran’s enemies.

The 4-meter-long drone aircraft can carry up to four cruise missiles and will have a range of 620 miles (1,000 kilometers), according to a state TV report — not far enough to reach arch-enemy Israel.

“The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship,” said Ahmadinejad at the inauguration ceremony, which fell on the country’s national day for its defence industries.

The goal of the aircraft, named Karrar or striker, is to “keep the enemy paralysed in its bases,” he said, adding that the aircraft is for deterrence and defensive purposes.

The president championed the country’s military self-sufficiency program, and said it will continue “until the enemies of humanity lose hope of ever attacking the Iranian nation.”

Airport security: X-ray scanner or full-body pat-down?

If you object to getting screened at the airport by the new full-body scanners that peer through clothes, you can choose to subject yourself to a full-body pat-down search.

But be warned that the Transportation Security Administration has begun an “enhanced” pat-down procedure at certain airports.

TSA officials confirmed that a new procedure is in use. But they declined to describe the procedure or say where it is being used.

“We are in the process of evaluating and updating our procedures at airports across the country,” said Nicholas Kimball, a TSA spokesman.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union and news reports from Boston and Las Vegas, the new procedure may involve some heavy patting and probing.

“To call it a pat-down is a euphemism,” said Christopher Ott, a spokesman for the ACLU in Massachusetts. Ott said he has heard from several passengers flying through Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Under the older procedure, TSA officials pat passengers to identify hidden objects, using the backs of their hands to search sensitive areas of the body. Under the new procedure, Ott said, TSA screeners feel and prod passengers with their palms and fingers.

News on this cartoon’s topic

Gen McChrystal removed

WASHINGTON – US PRESIDENT Barack Obama yesterday removed his top US commander in Afghanistan following a public flap over the general’s controversial remarks to a magazine.

The unceremonious exit of General Stanley McChrystal injected greater uncertainty into the troubled war effort, taking place just as the United States was about to launch a major offensive in and around the key southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the stronghold of the Taleban.

Gen McChrystal, who derided the Obama administration and its handling of the war in Afghanistan in a lengthy profile in the Rolling Stone magazine, was summoned to the White House yesterday to explain his remarks.

After a 30-minute face-to-face meeting, Mr Obama said he accepted the resignation of the petulant general and relieved him of his command of US forces in Afghanistan. ‘It was a difficult decision, it saddens me to lose a soldier who I’ve come to respect and admire,’ said Mr Obama, noting that the decision was not prompted by the ‘personal insult’.

‘But war is bigger than any one man or woman. Difficult as this is, it is the right decision for our national security.’

Raser Technologies Unveils 100+ MPG Plug-In Hybrid Hummer at THE SAE World Congress In Detroit

Technology in New Electric Hummer Could Drive Bold Leap Ahead for U.S. Automakers, Making Popular Trucks & SUVs ‘Greener Than a Prius’

Raser Technologies, Inc. unveiled a 100+ mpg Hummer H3 powered by Raser’s plug-in hybrid E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) at the 2009 SAE International World Congress, Cobo Center, Detroit, MI.

Raser developed the 100+ mpg Electric H3 demonstration vehicle working closely with Hummer.  Just one year ago at the 2008 SAE World Congress, Raser and its development partner FEV Inc., Auburn Hills, MI, a leading automotive integrator, introduced Raser’s E-REV power train, similar in function to the Chevy Volt but designed for use in a variety of larger full-sized SUVs and light trucks.  The vehicle was developed in association with the Plug-in Hybrid Development Consortium, co-founded by Raser along with leading electric utilities, lithium ion battery companies and other automotive technology companies.

hummer_stats2

Raser CEO Brent M. Cook said, “The technology in this electric-powered Hummer is a leap ahead for U.S. Automakers.  It could make the nation’s popular light trucks and SUVs greener than a Prius.”

The vehicle has performed well in initial test drives and dynamometer testing conducted by FEV.  Video from recent test drives of the 100+mpg H3 is available online:  http://rasertech.com/hummer

The plug-in electric Hummer H3 has a range of about 400 miles, driving its first 40 miles exclusively on batteries before turning on its combustion generator. Most vehicles drive fewer than 40 miles a day, most drivers would rarely use gas and average more than 100 mpg in gas fuel economy over time.

Raser’s E-REV power train was designed for most full-sized 4WD SUVs and light trucks, which represent nearly half of the vehicles on U.S. roads today because of their versatility and wide application in fleets.

“We chose the Hummer H3 and H3T as demonstration vehicles because trucks and SUVs are the best-selling vehicles in America and can benefit the most from increased fuel economy and reduced emissions,” said Cook.

The Electric Hummer H3 is propelled entirely on electricity by Raser’s 200kW advanced AC induction motor connected to a 4WD transmission. A small high efficiency EcoTech engine uses Raser’s 100KW electric generator to recharge the batteries while driving and provides additional electric power when needed.

“Our goal was to demonstrate that electric vehicle technology is a viable solution for a variety of vehicle platforms,” said Gary Rogers, president and chief executive officer of FEV. “This full-sized SUV extended-range electric vehicle shows that fuel economy in larger vehicles does not mean sacrificing power and utility.”

Nuclear Obama: Will Cap-and-Trade Plans Spur Nuclear Revival?

Will President Obama—no huge booster of nuclear power on the campaign trail—become the nuclear industry’s best friend?

ObamaChu_art_257_20090311151126.jpg

Nuclear dream team? (AP)

Here’s the thinking making the rounds in pro-nuclear circles: The Obama administration has talked up the need to dramatically curb greenhouse-gas emissions, and even included revenues from a non-existent cap-and-trade scheme in its 2010-2014 budget. To curb emissions so much will require an across-the-board development of low-emissions energy, from wind farms to, yes, more new nuclear plants.

Nuclear advocate and author William Tucker makes the optimists’ case in the American Spectator (tip of the hat). When climate policies run into opposition from Congress, led by coal-dependent states, the nuclear lightbulb will turn on:

Someone in the administration — probably Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who knows in his heart that wind and solar can’t cut it — will suggest that that a carbon tax be coupled with the revival of nuclear power. Suddenly, the dam will break. NRC regulatory mazes that are still trying to protect us from Three Mile Island will be swept aside. Construction schedules will be accelerated. (The TVA just built a new reactor at Watts Bar in three years and under budget, using a license granted in the 1970s.) Tens of thousands of construction jobs will be created overnight. The French and Japanese will provide the financing. We may even revive the steel industry in the process.

The idea that the climate-change imperative will give fresh legs to nuclear power isn’t entirely new; that’s what’s pushing once-hostile environmentalists toward the pro-nuclear camp. And a carbon tax or at least expensive emissions in a cap-and-trade program would go a long way toward improving nuclear power’s currently grim economics.

But even an Obama administration bear hug that “sweeps aside regulatory mazes” won’t necessarily “accelerate construction schedules”—those depend in large part on financing and getting a hold of sometimes limited nuclear components. And while a big nuclear build out would indeed create as many as 20,000 jobs, it would be hard to create them overnight, given the three-decade atrophy of the U.S. nuclear industry.

What’s really missing is any discussion of nuclear waste. Now that Yucca Mountain’s been given the Old Yeller treatment, there is no long-term solution for storing nuclear waste that’s remotely close to fruition. For the current fleet of nuclear reactors, which produce about 2,000 tons of radioactive fuel a year, the death of Yucca Mountain just means business as usual.

But sooner or later, if nuclear power becomes an even bigger part of the nation’s energy mix, the nuclear waste problem is going to have to become an even bigger part of the answer.

Please enjoy these mazes.

OraGanizational  Overview

Team of monkeys . com, founded in  February 1964* is a subsidiary of STOM Research, founded in December 1961*. Utilizing the vast resources at its disposal, STOM Research has resulted in conclusive evidence that monkeys working in teams can benefit the human race in ways not previously accepted because monkeys working alone are unable to perform the same task(s).

Notable highlights from STOM Resarch’s 59 decades.

  • 1956  – Dr Otto Verbraucher wins science recognition accolades award 1956
  • 1959  – Able and Miss Baker – First team of monkeys to go to space and come back
  • 1962  – Cuban Missle Crisis forces STOM resEarch Labs in Las Tunas to close.
  • 1977  – Shakespear Theorum proved wrong. Even an infinite number o monkeys working in an organized team will still not render the complete works of shakespears complete works in proper order.
  • 1988 – Internet is opened to the commercial public enabling teamofmonkeys.com to be available to non-military personnel.
